NYPD Officer Jason Rivera, 22, was shot and killed in the line of duty on January 21, 2022 in Harlem, New York. Jason’s police partner Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, was shot in the head. Lashawn McNeil, 47, is accused of shooting both officers.
Jason and Wilbert were responding to a domestic violence call regarding an argument between a mother and her adult son. 3 NYPD officers total went to the apartment were the 911 call was made.
One officer was talking with the mother. Jason and Wilbert attempted to go to a back room to speak with Lashawn, it is not known if they were going to arrest him.
Lashawn then allegedly quickly opened up a room door and shot Jason. Seconds later Lashawn allegedly shot Wilbert in the head. The third officer on scene then shot Lashawn in the head and arm. Lashawn was hospitalized in critical condition.
Jason died on the scene. Wilbert was taken to the hospital via ambulance.
A .45-caliber Glock with a high-capacity magazine capable of holding up to 40 extra rounds was used to kill Jason, the gun had been stolen in Baltimore in 2017.
President Joe Biden released this statement:
Jill and I are saddened to hear two NYPD officers were shot last night — one fatally. We’re keeping them and their families in our prayers. Officers put on the badge and head into harm’s way every day. We’re grateful to them and their families for their extraordinary sacrifice.
Jason was assigned to the 32nd NYPD Precinct. Jason was an officer since November 2020.
