INMATE DIED AT MECKLENBURG COUNTY JAIL

An inmate at The Mecklenburg County Jail died by way of suicide inside the jail on April 19, 2022. 47-year-old William Rhinesmith died in his jail cell located at 801 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC. 

William was found hanging in his cell around 5 p.m. Officials say CPR was performed by jail medical staff and EMS. William was then transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased at approximately 5:58 p.m.

William had been locked up at the jail since Friday, April 15, 2022. There were no signs of foul play and all preliminary reports indicates suicide, according to officials. The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct a thorough investigation as the medical examiner determines the official cause of death.

Francine Laney died on March 2, 2022 at the Mecklenburg County Jail.

20-year-old Karon Golightly died on May 14, 2021 at the same jail.

51-year-old Michael Mangan died at the jail in 2020.

A 17-year-old inmate died at a jail location in 2020.
